The Hotter You Burn by Gena Showalter

Blurb:

New York Times bestselling author Gena Showalter is back with a sizzling Original Heartbreakers story featuring a troubled playboy and the woman he can’t resist…

Beck O'ckley is ruthless in the boardroom...and the bedroom. He's never been with the same woman twice, and vows he never will. With a past as twisted as his, meaningless sex keeps the demons at bay. His motto: One and done. No harm, no foul.

Harlow Glass is the most hated girl in town. The beautiful artist is penniless, jobless and homeless. When she sneaks into Beck's home—her ancestral estate—for food, she's shocked by his early return...and her immediate, sizzling and intense attraction to him.

For the first time in Beck's life, he can't get a woman out of his mind. All too soon, friendship blooms into obsession and he'll have to break her heart...or surrender his own

My Review: 5 EPIC STARS!

I just can't even express how much I adored this book! I swear, I didn't think that I would ever be swayed from my diehard love of PNR but dang it, Gena is slaying me with her Heartbreakers series! I love the emotions that books allow you experience while reading, laughter, sadness, fear, and excitement. That being said, very few books can actually make me break down and cry. But Gena has managed to accomplish that feat with all three of the books in this series so far and I have no doubt that the final book, The Harder You Fall will absolutely destroy me! As a matter of fact, I'm already stocking up on tissue in preparation of it's release.

I think Harlow is one of my favorite heroines that Gena has written so far. I honestly did not think I would like her at all after finding out that she was a bully. I was totally prepared to hate Harlow because I was on the receiving end of a bully in the 6th grade and let me tell you, it sucked! So I was totally caught off guard when I found myself sympathizing with her. It takes a lot of talent to make a character that is normally hated and then turn them into someone that you love and are rooting for. It's not easy, but Gena pulled it off and that right there people is why I love her writing so much!

Harlow is at rock bottom, she's totally destitute. The residents of Strawberry Valley loathe her, they treat her like dirt but she takes it all as her due, trying to pay penance for all the harm that she caused when she was a teenager. My heart really broke for her. It was more than understanding why she did what she did, it was because of how she lost everything and yet still tried to make amends. Never getting mad at the crap that was thrown at her, and let me tell you she was treated very horribly. She was very empathetic and vulnerable but still had plenty of sassiness and spunk when needed.

Beck rocks! He is a naughty boy, a bit of a man-slut and for you Lords of the Underworld fans, I would say that he reminds me of a lot of the deliciously wicked, William. *SQUEE* Beck doesn't sleep with a woman more than once. He grew up in foster care with his friends, Jase and West and after a very traumatic childhood he is unwilling to form attachments to anyone for fear of losing them. But all that changes when he meets Harlow. She brings out all of his protective instincts and he finds that he can't stay away from her. Beck hides his true feelings behind a happy go lucky facade but deep down he is insecure and feels unworthy of Harlow. It was so hard to see how much pain Beck hid inside himself. He was horribly lonely but too scared to hope for more. He knows that Harlow wants love and commitment but he doesn't believe that he can give her that so he comes up with the hair brained idea of setting her up with another man. LOL Yeah, that plan does not go over well for either of them. Jealousy makes for some very hilarious situations as Beck "helps" Harlow find the right guy for her. The banter between these two is beyond hilarious and I found myself giggling through most of the book!

It took a moment of tragedy to finally give Beck the strength to forgive himself and realize that he did deserve a happy ever after. The last two chapters of this book were just....WOW. I totally wasn't expecting what happened to happen and seeing how Beck reacted.... Gena, you utterly destroyed me. My husband just loved waking up at 2:30 in the morning to me sobbing in bed. LOL I won't give away any spoilers but the ending was one of the most emotionally intense moments of any book that I have ever read. I am already girding my loins in preparation of West's book because I have a feeling that I may not survive the emotional overload of his story.

Bravo to another amazing addition to this wonderful series! So peeps, grab your tissues, a glass of wine and prepare yourself for an emotional rollarcoaster ride!
