Okay, you guys have probably been seeing all of my posts on Twitter and Facebook about this. I LOVED this book so hard and have been so excited for you all to be able to read the awesomeness that is The Closer You Come that I've hardly been able to contain myself! I had the immense privilege and pleasure to receive an ARC from my absolute favorite author ever, Gena Showalter. Yes, I'm fangirling, but this is the woman that first introduced me to my favorite genre, PNR and to my very first book husband, Maddox (The Darkest Night). For that alone I will always have a special place in my heart for her and her Lords of the Underworld series. So here I am, a die hard PNR girl and here comes Gena's new contemporary series, The Original Heartbreakers. I was a teeny, tiny bit worried, would I like it since it's not PNR? I knew I had to give it a chance and after reading the prequel, The One You Want, I fell in love with the residents of Strawberry Valley! I couldn't wait to read the next book and IT. WAS. EPIC! I immediately ordered a copy for my kindle because this is going to definitely be a reread for me! It's available to purchase now so grab your copy today, I promise you won't be disappointed!
5X to the moon and back STARS!!!
Okay, first off, just WOW. I swear, it doesn't matter if it's PNR, YA or Contemporary, Gena Showalter rocks my freaking world every time! The Closer You Come is book one in her new Original Heartbreakers series and she has knocked it out of the park with this one. For those people that were worried about the genre change have no fear, The Closer You Come is not some light, fluffy contemporary, it's gritty and emotional and has all of the elements that Gena's fans love about her PNR series just without the paranormal aspect to it.
Jase has led a life of emptiness and loneliness. Since childhood, everyone that he has ever cared about has left him. As he bounced from foster home to foster home, the only constant in his life were his two best friends, Beck and West. After a tragic event, Jase was sent to prison for 9 years. Wanting a fresh start he moves to Strawberry Valley with his friends and attempts to rebuild his life.
Do you know how you can tell just 15 minutes into a book that you are going to need a huge box of tissues for that ugly cry looming on the horizon? Yeah, totally happened to me with this one. My emotions were all over the place while reading The Closer You Come. Happy and giggly one minute (oh how I adore Gena's sassy, smart mouth heroines) and then rip my heart out upset and in tears the next. Jase is your perfect alpha hero, domineering, possessive but distant, sometimes almost to the point that you think he's emotionless. But OMG, he's not, he has the most amazing depth of emotion and the vulnerability and pain that he tries to hide literally breaks my heart. Jase feels, he feels so much, and so deeply that he fears it and tries to keep it bottled up inside to protect himself. I just wanted to grab him up in a big hug and tell him that he WAS good enough to be loved. <= Yeah, see what I mean? Ugly cry happened right there...

Brook Lynn is her sister's keeper, or at least she feels like she is. She's the responsible one, no time for fun, working herself into exhaustion with two jobs, all while trying to protect her party girl sister from herself. She's strong willed, feisty and unbearably lonely. She's beyond attracted to Jase but there's just one teeny problem, the very first time that she meets him, she catches him in a compromising situation. Yeah, I know that would be very difficult for most people to get over but that's one of the things that I loved most about Brook Lynn. She is tenderhearted and forgiving without being a pushover and she was the perfect compliment to Jase. She brought love and light into his dark world and made him want to rise above his past and be a better man.
Fiery and passionate, poignant and heartbreaking, Gena Showalter is the master of creating sizzling storylines with sexy compelling characters. If you are a fan of Gena's PNR series you will definitely want to give this one a read. The Closer You Come is a phenomenal start to an exciting new series and I am now seriously addicted to these Heartbreakers!
*I received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.
BLURB:
New York Times bestselling author Gena Showalter introduces the Original Heartbreakers, where three not-quite-reformed bad boys are about to meet the women who will bring them to their knees.
Just released from prison, Jase Hollister has only one goal: stay out of trouble. Strawberry Valley, Oklahoma, sounds like the perfect place for him and his two brothers-by-circumstance to settle down and live a nice, simple life. Model citizen isn’t exactly this rugged bachelor’s default setting—especially when it comes to a certain hot-blooded Southern beauty—but he's determined to play by the rules.
Brook Lynn Dillon has always been the responsible type. Not that it’s done her much good. The down-on-her-luck waitress is broke, single and wouldn’t know fun if it bit her. Or so she thinks. Jase makes bad look oh, so good. Dangerous, sexy and tempting as sin, he is everything she never knew she wanted. Passion sizzles between them, but is it enough to melt his resistance? After all, the right kind of trouble might be just what he needs…
